CRESAPTOWN — A 36-year-old man who allegedly fired shots inside a Spruce Street residence late Monday was taken into custody Tuesday morning after a night-long barricade situation was concluded peacefully and without injuries, according to Maryland State Police.
Michael Wilhelm II was charged with four counts of first-degree assault and four counts of reckless endangerment.
He remained jailed Tuesday afternoon at the Allegany County Detention Center in lieu of $250,000 bond set by a district court commissioner. A bail review for Wilhelm was scheduled for Wednesday, according to a jail official.
Police said additional charges are pending.
The incident began at about 11:30 p.m., when a 911 caller reported hearing shots fired from inside a residence in the 14000 block of Spruce Street. More shots were heard minutes later when troopers arrived and approached the residence.
Repeated efforts to contact Wilhelm by state police were unsuccessful.
The incident ended 9 1/2 hours later, when Wilhelm walked out of his residence and surrendered.
Following the arrest, C3I investigators remained at the scene executing a warrant-authorized search of the residence for evidence relating to the shooting.
Maryland State Police responded to the scene with its Special Tactical Assault Team Element (STATE) and its Hostage Recovery Team.
Additional troopers, the Allegany County Sheriff’s Office and officers of the Maryland Department of Natural Resources also responded along with a state police K-9 unit.
The Maryland State Police Tactical Assault Team Element used an armored vehicle to approach the residence during the standoff.
Initial reports hours into the incident indicated Wilhelm had recently moved into the residence with his father. Police were uncertain at that time if anyone else was in the residence, however they had reason to believe Wilhelm was alone.
Police said a motive for the shooting “is unclear at this time.”
The incident remains under investigation.
