CUMBERLAND — Adams Family Funeral Home is awaiting repairs to the lower level following a 24-inch water main break that occurred July 6, according to owner Bob Adams.
Even though repairs still need to be made, the funeral home has been fully operational.
“We have never been down for five minutes following the water main break. Within a couple hours of the flood we were in the church with a 9 a.m. service,” said Adams. “I’m very thankful to all the colleagues, volunteers, city officials and the mayor for expressing their concern and their help. The community response has been super terrific. We are going to come through this fine, if not better than before.”
All the drywall, carpet, some surgical flooring and about 20 caskets inside the funeral home need to be replaced. The water main break also damaged three vehicles that were located in the garage. Adams estimates that about 25,000 square feet of damage was done to the lower level of the funeral home.
The drywall and the carpet have been ripped out and dehumidifiers and fans are being used to draw out the moisture. The funeral home is awaiting an insurance estimate before the work can begin, Adams said. Roger Bennett, acting Allegany County 911 chief, estimated $300,000 in damages to the funeral home.
Bedford Street at the McMullen Bridge remains closed, according to Tracy Watkins, the city’s administrative associate of water distribution. The road will be closed for about three weeks until all repairs are made, said Jeff Rhodes, acting city administrator.
“We are performing cleanup this week,” said Watkins. “As far as the leak, all repairs are complete.”
“Our crews did a great job repairing the line but the damage from the leak will take a while longer to repair,” said Rhodes.
A jersey barrier on Bedford Street had to be removed in order to replace the broken water main. In addition to replacing the wall, a small section of the road will need to be repaved, Rhodes said. The barrier wall also had to be removed so that the playground at Banneker Gardens could be accessed and repaired.
“Carl Belt will be moving in to fix the wall that had to be removed so that the repairs to the leak could be made,” said Watkins.
