CUMBERLAND — A Virginia man has been sentenced in connection with the October 2011 attempted armed robbery of the Food Lion supermarket in Cresaptown.
Stephen Lee Mayhew Sr., 51, was sentenced to 20 years in prison with five years suspended when he appeared Thursday in Allegany County Circuit Court before Judge W. Timothy Finan.
The charge is the result of an Oct. 28, 2011, incident where Mayhew displayed a handgun to two clerks at the Food Lion in Cresaptown and demanded money. The clerks refused to open the register and Mayhew eventually ran from the store with no money.
Upon his release, Mayhew will be on supervised probation for a period of five years.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant State’s Attorney Sam Lane. Mayhew was represented by Cumberland attorney Sean Gallagher.
