OAKLAND — A Grant County, W.Va., man has been charged with arson in connection with an Oct. 21 fire in a vacant Oakland residence.
Travis Allen Odell, 30, of Gormania was charged with first- and second-degree arson, malicious burning and malicious destruction of property in the arson of the home at 68 Steyer Gorman Road.
Odell was jailed initially on $50,000 bond that was lowered Tuesday in a district court bail review to $25,000. He posted bond later in the day for his pretrial release.
Investigators said the three-story, single-family home was declared a total loss after the 9:47 p.m. fire. The owners of the property were identified as Michael and Linda Sharkey.
Investigators determined the fire originated in the interior of the home and had been deliberately ignited.
They were able to determine that Odell was observed leaving the scene minutes after the fire started and that he disliked the company that was in the process of razing the vacant home.
It took 30 minutes and more than 30 volunteer firefighters from Gorman, Oakland, Deep Creek, Bayard and Mount Storm, W.Va., to control the blaze. No injuries were reported on the evening of the fire.
If convicted of the charges, Odell faces penalties up to 28 years imprisonment and/or $37,500 in fines.
