CUMBERLAND — The Cumberland mayor and City Council are seeking letters of interest from local residents who are willing to serve on several city boards and commissions.
Positions are available on the Administrative Appeals Board, Bicycle Advisory Commission, Downtown Development Commission, Economic Development Commission, Human Relations Commission, Planning and Zoning Commission and the Zoning Board of Appeals.
Letters of interest should be sent by Feb. 20 to Mayor and City Council, Attn: City Clerk, 57 N. Liberty St., Cumberland, MD 21502 or by email to meirich@allconet.org.
The Administrative Appeals Board meets to hear and render decisions on appeals relating to the elections, civil service and ethics. The five members serve three-year-terms and meet as needed.
The Bicycle Advisory Commission manages implementation of the Cumberland Trails and Bikeway Master Plan. The seven members serve three-year terms and meet the second Thursday of the month at 4 p.m.
The Downtown Development Commission oversees the maintenance and operation of the downtown mall. A citizen-at-large serves on the 12-member board that otherwise consists of property and business owners. Members serve three-year terms and meet the second Thursday of the month.
The Economic Development Commission develops recommendations for a local plan and identifies and evaluates business development opportunities and incentives. The 12 members are appointed to three-year terms and meet bimonthly.
The Human Relations Commission handles discrimination complaints and disputes and advises public and private agencies as well as the mayor and council. The seven members serve three-year terms and meet the fourth Tuesday of the month.
The Planning and Zoning Commission reviews and approves major subdivision and site plans and makes recommendations to the mayor and council for zoning and development. The five members serve five-year terms and meet the second Monday of the month.
The Zoning Board of Appeals hears and decides appeals to decisions made by the zoning administrator. The board also may authorize variances from the zoning ordinance and applications for conditional and nonconforming uses. The five members serve three-year terms. This is the only board that receives payment at $25 biweekly.
