FROSTBURG — The Greater Cumberland Committee’s membership meeting Thursday will feature Brit Kirwan, who will share insights on the Chesapeake Crescent Initiative, a public/private partnership involving government entities, the higher education community and entrepreneurial business leaders in Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia.
The goal of the initiative, formalized in 2007, is to focus on regional collaboration; environment/energy; innovation/economy; and secure and sustainable development.
Kirwan will comment on the corresponding university alliance, the Chesapeake Crescent Innovation Alliance, which is the first in the nation to extend across three distinct political jurisdictions. The intent of the Innovation Alliance is to determine areas of potential cooperation, foster entrepreneurial development and early stage investment and motivate research-based inventions to marketplace commercialization.
As chancellor of the University System of Maryland, Kirwan is a nationally recognized authority on critical issues shaping the higher education landscape. He served as president of Ohio State University for four years and president of University of Maryland, College Park, for 10 years. Prior to his presidency, he was a member of the University of Maryland faculty for 24 years.
Kirwan chairs the National Research Council Board of Higher Education and Workforce, chairs the College Board’s Commission on Access, Admissions and Success in Higher Education and co-chairs the Knight Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics. He is also vice chairman of the Business-Higher Education Forum Board of Directors. Kirwan has been an honorary member of TGCC for several years.
The business meeting and panel discussion is set for 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Leake Room, Frostburg State University. Space considerations require the meeting to be opened only to TGCC members and their guests. To confirm attendance, please contact TGCC at jmccoy@greatercc. org or 301-722-0090 by Sept. 1.
The Greater Cumberland Committee is a not-for-profit organization of 75 civic and business leaders representing Allegany and Garrett counties, Bedford and Somerset counties in Pennsylvania and Mineral County, W.Va.
