Cumberland —
CUMBERLAND — After having been open for less than two months, the Canal Place Trading Co. is terminating its lease with the Canal Place Preservation & Development Authority.
Employee Jeff Hedrick cited problems with Canal Place management as one of the decisions to terminate the lease. The termination was mutual with the authority, according to a press release from Canal Place Executive Director Renee Bone.
“My opinion was this,” said Hedrick. “If the Canal Place authority didn’t really make an issue of it then I would not make an issue of it. If they do make an issue of it, they’re probably going to regret that they opened this bag up.
“Our official position is that the location was not working out for us,” said Hedrick. “We’re going to relocate to the Baltimore and Centre Street area where there’s 12 months of regular pedestrian traffic.
“There has been a lot of negativity at Canal Place and I had no intention at all of adding to that when we chose to relocate there,” said Hedrick. “Unfortunately the people who suffer because of the problems at Canal Place are the merchants and the tourists, not the people on the board or the executive director and her staff.”
Bone said that the authority was unable to discuss specifics of the lease.
“There’s a lot of positive things that are happening at Canal Place,” said Doug Hutchins, owner and manager of Cumberland Trail Connection, another tenant of Shops at Canal Place. “There’s been a huge im-provement in the three years since I’ve been there. I’m happy with the quality of the music here and with the events that are taking place.
“I think the board of directors and the people that manage Canal Place have made huge improvements in the three years since I’ve been on board,” added Hutchins. “The board members were accessible to me, including Andy Vick and Renee Bone. I can go up to their office anytime and I can call them when I need to. The maintenance staff are also very responsive.”
Other tenants include Roman’s cafe, a seasonal Queen City Creamery site, Arts at Canal Place and The Crabby Pig.
