CUMBERLAND — The Friday arrest of a Cumberland man, coupled with the July 21 apprehension of a Romney, W.Va., resident, has caused local authorities to believe that they have in custody the perpetrators of Town Centre jewelry store thefts in March and May.
Following the March 14 breaking and entering at Morton’s Jewelry Store and a similar crime on May 9 at Ray’s Jewelry Store, both on Baltimore Street, C3I investigators developed leads on Jeffery Pratt, 24, of Cumberland, and Aaron White, 54, of Romney.
White was apprehended in West Virginia nine days ago and extradited via the Allegany County Sheriff’s Office. Pratt was taken into custody Friday in Cumberland by C3I officers.
Both jewelry stores were closed at the times of the burglaries. Police said substantial amounts of jewelry were taken from each store. Money was also stolen from Ray’s Jewelry.
Each man is charged with two counts of second-degree burglary, felony theft and malicious destruction of property.
Although White was released by an Allegany County District Court commissioner until his court appearance, Pratt was jailed on a bond of $100,000.
