CUMBERLAND — For the 10th consecutive year, Cumberland’s downtown canyons will reverbrate with the sound of motorcycles Friday morning as America’s 9/11 Ride passes through the Queen City of the Alleghenies.
America’s 911 Foundation was founded in October 2001 by Ted and Lisa Sjurseth in response to the hijacked airplane tragedies of Sept. 11, 2001, in New York City, the Pentagon and Somerset County, Pa.
The foundation’s goal is to provide support and assistance for families of those who protect and serve the larger public by answering the 911 call. Each year, the foundation leads philanthropic initiatives, including the annual motorcycle ride to pursue and promote continued support for its mission. To date, the event has raised more than $500,000 for scholarships, new equipment and donations.
The wheeled entourage leaves Shanksville, Pa., the site of the Flight 93 crash, Friday morning and is expected to stop in Cumberland at about 9:30 a.m. at Allegany College of Maryland. The convoy will pass through The Narrows and then onto North and South Mechanic streets before going east on Interstate 68 and then onto Willowbrook Road and to the college.
More than 800 riders are registered to participate.
The riders will also stop at the Prime Outlets at Hagerstown.
Riding this year from Arlington, Va., to New York City will be country music star Mark Wills, who will perform Friday night at the Double Tree Inn at Arlington. Wills is known for his hits “Jacob’s Ladder,” “Don’t Laugh at Me” and “19 Something.”
On Saturday, the riders will move on to New York City and Ground Zero.
The ride is escorted by police, including two officers from El Paso, Texas. The foundation will present flags flown at all three crash sites on Sept. 11, 2009, to Gov. Martin O’Malley.
Maryland State Fire Marshal William Barnard will accept the flags on the governor’s behalf during the Hagerstown stop. Additional flags will be presented to Maryland State Police Lt. Col. Turano.
