CUMBERLAND — Fourth of July weekend music will start this evening with Friday After Five and culminate with a concert Sunday on Washington Street.
Today’s entertainment will feature Four on the Floor, which will play on the Liberty Street stage from 5 to 7:30 p.m. One of the originators of Friday After Five, the band features Robbie Brooke, keyboard; Harlan Brooke, drums; Linda Brockey, bass; and Jerry Brockey, guitar. The group plays a collective blend of country and classic rock.
Performing on the Mechanic Street stage is 33 and 1/3, an acoustic rock trio with a twist. Named for their affection for the music released on long play vinyl records, the trio plays music that caters to baby boomers — mainly music of the 1950s to the ’80s. Members of the band are Jim Corley, vocals and percussion; Ray Wagner, guitar and vocals; and Jim Rowan, guitar and vocals. 33 and 1/3 will perform from 7:30 to 10 p.m.
Taking the M&T/George Street stage at 7 p.m. will be Midnight Rodeo, an original/classic rock quintet based in Bedford County, Pa. The band, which formed in August 1996, has steadily played for the past 12 years. A typical show includes music ranging from Alabama to Lynyrd Skynyd to Elvis Presley.
On display during the festivities will be the “Monster Trike” built as a high school graduation project at Meyersdale High School by two teenaged twins, Jessy and Heather Perts. With their father, Steve, overseeing their effort, the girls took two years to put it together, using parts from large trucks.
A 1976 Freightliner was the basis for the diesel-powered contrivance, which also required months of negotiations with Pennsylvania authorities before it could be licensed, and insured, before taking to the road.
The Farmers’ Market will return Saturday with farm fresh produce, plants and flowers and home baked treats from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Johnny Moore and Tom Skidmore will entertain on the Liberty Street stage from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
As part of Cumberland’s Independence Day celebration and in coordination of the city’s fireworks display, the popular Chinese Bandits will perform on Washington Street in front of the Allegany County Library from 7 to 10 p.m. Patriotic music will be played during the fireworks display. Along with the Chinese Bandits, disc jockey Mark Stevens will be spinning patriotic tunes.
“The top of Washington Street is a great place to view the fireworks shooting off from Constitution Park,” said Ed Mullaney, downtown manager. “We decided to add to the festivities with Chinese Bandits.”
For those with a sweet tooth, Queen City Creamery will be selling ice cream by the cone or the dish. Some lawn chair seating will be available but people are encouraged to bring their own comfortable seating to view the fireworks. Always a crowd favorite, Chinese Bandits brings the classic sounds from the ’50s to the present.
