MOUNTAIN LAKE PARK — Private woodland owners in Garrett and Allegany counties have until Feb. 22 to apply for a cost-sharing program that will improve habitat for golden-winged warblers and other wildlife.
The Working Lands for Wildlife program is funded by way of a partnership between the Natural Resources Conservation Service and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. To inquire, call Chad Bucklew, district conservationist with NRCS, at 301-334-6957.
There is $295,000 available in Maryland, Bucklew said, who added a minimum of 10 acres is needed to qualify. Turkey, grouse, woodcock and song birds will benefit from the clearings that are created within the forested properties.
These birds depend upon shrubby, vegetated areas like forest clear-cuts, alder swamps, utility rights-of-way and similar settings.
