Allegany College of Maryland plans for 50th anniversary celebration

Cumberland — CUMBERLAND — Allegany College of Maryland is planning a classic car show and concert to celebrate its 50th anniversary in September, and the community is invited to attend the free event.

Planned for Sept. 24 at the Cumberland campus, festivities in-clude the cruise-in from 2 to 4 p.m., followed by a concert by The Hubcaps from 4 to 6 p.m.

“It’s open to the public. It’s free,” said Linda Price, vice president of advancement and enrollment management, who updated the Board of Trustees on Monday.

“We’re trying to give back to the community for all the years we’ve been serving the region.”

Originally housed in the former Carver Community School on Frederick Street, Allegany College of Maryland  — then called Allegany Community College — enrolled its first 100 or so students in September 1961.

Today, the 316-acre Cumberland campus has 15 buildings and more than 4,000 credit students. ACM also opened Pennsylvania campuses in Somerset and Bedford in 1989.

Anniversary event planners chose a classic car theme partly because the events are so popular in the area.

“If you’ve ever attended one of these, they bring in tons of people,” Price said, adding that The Hubcaps’ oldies rock ’n’ roll music will pair well with the car show. “That’s the idea, is to bring a lot of people to campus.”

A 5K run is being planned for the spring to continue the 50th anniversary celebration.

In other business on Monday, the trustees:

• Met for about three hours for a strategic planning session to “align the goals and initiatives of the president, the college, and the Board of Trustees,” said board chair Kim Leonard. The planning session was closed to the public.

• Heard a progress report on the college’s Cultural Diversity Plan, which all community colleges are required to submit to the state. Board members wanted to review the 10-page document and provide suggestions before it is formally submitted in August.

• Learned from President Cynthia Bambera that the Pennsylvania legislature approved $700,000 for the Pennsylvania campuses, all of which is to be used to supplement student tuition costs.
