ROCKY GAP — Lynn Patton, a Maryland Veterans Commission member and former Mountain District commander for the American Legion, will be the speaker at the Rocky Gap Veterans Cemetery 29th annual Memorial Day ceremony May 31 at 2 p.m.
Patton was born in Cumberland but grew up all over the state of Maryland. He joined the U.S. Air Force a year and a half after graduating from high school and completed a tour of duty in Vietnam. He was assigned to the 377th Security Police Squadron at Tan Son Nhut Air Base. When he discharged from the service, Patton joined the Baltimore County Police Department and after various assignments, he retired in 1993 as a detective.
A veterans advocate who is active in the American Legion, Patton holds a position on the Department Executive Committee as well as the Mountain District adjutant. He is past county commander for Garrett County and past district commander for the Mountain District.
Patton holds a life membership in the Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 172 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8826. He is also a member of AMVETS Post 10, Hagerstown.
Following an appointment to the Maryland Veterans Commission in 2004, Patton was reappointed in June 2009 for another five-year term to represent the 6th Congressional District. He and his wife, Linda, reside in Garrett County.
The program will also offer comments from guests, music from the Ali Ghan Shrine Band and a tribute to all veterans who have died in service to the nation.
