Swanton woman killed, Oakland man charged with DUI

OAKLAND — A Swanton woman was killed and an Oakland man was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol following a single-vehicle crash early Sunday in the 6000 block of George Washington Highway, according to the Garrett County Sheriff’s Office.

Samantha Gibson, 21, a passenger in the vehicle, was ejected during the 1:30 a.m. crash and was taken to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, W.Va., where she succumbed to her injuries, police said.

Deputies arrested 24-year-old Bryson Dixon, the driver of the vehicle, at the scene and charged him with driving under the influence related offenses, police said.

Dixon was jailed before being granted pre-trial release Sunday after he posted $2,500 bond set by a district court commissioner.

Preliminary investigation indicated Dixon was operating a GMC Envoy eastbound on George Washington Highway  when, for unknown reasons, he lost control and collided with an embankment, causing Gibson to be ejected from the vehicle.

Police said the investigation of the crash remains open with further charges pending final results of the investigation.

The fatal crash occurred less than an hour following a single-vehicle crash in Garrett County on Underwood Road near the Monte Vista Road in Oakland.

The sheriff’s office said a 17-year-old female lost control of a 2007 Toyota Camry that traveled off the roadway, down an embankment and struck some trees before it caught fire.

The driver escaped the vehicle and called for assistance, prompting the response of a relative who parked his 1999 Pontiac Sunfire up the hill from the burning Toyota.

The Pontiac vehicle was left with the transmission in neutral before it drifted down the hill and came to a rest against the the burning Toyota vehicle and caught fire.

The driver of the Toyota was taken to Garrett Memorial Hospital for treatment of unspecified injuries.

The Oakland Volunteer Fire Department extinguished the fire following alert at 12:45 a.m.

The sheriff’s office is continuing to investigate the incident.
