Barbecue competition seeking more entries, vendors

Mountain Maryland cookoff, Aug. 19-21 at fairgrounds, also could use sponsors

— CUMBERLAND — Entries are still being accepted and local food and craft vendors being sought for the first Mountain Maryland Barbecue Competition and Festival, Aug. 19-21, at the Allegany County Fairgrounds.

Jeff Grabenstein of the District 16 Volunteer Fire Department said the state championship competition sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbecue Society is the first of its kind here and is hoped to become an annual event.

District 16 VFD and ABATE of Western Maryland are collaborating in staging the festival that is expected to bring thousands of tourists to the area.

“This will bring many things to Mountain Maryland and the surrounding area. These people will be spending their money at local businesses — gas, food, overnight stays and shopping. They will also be checking out the area for future trips and spending for hotel, motel accommodations, dining and tourism.

“They will also be checking out the hospitality of Mountain Maryland. This could mean bringing new businesses to our area, benefiting every business that is now here,” said Grabenstein.

Grabenstein said the barbecue competition and festival — proclaimed in November by Gov. Martin O’Malley to be a state championship competition — “is costly to bring here.” He said monetary support is still needed for the event and that he “knows and understands that donatable dollars are fewer that in past years.”

Several sponsorship levels are available. “Some of these options allow for you to showcase your company at this event,” he said.

Proceeds from the event will benefit District 16 VFD and ABATE of Western Maryland’s community service fund.

To enter the competition or for more information, contact Grabenstein at grabensteinjl@yahoo.com or access www.district16vfd.com.

Main event competitors will prepare entries in categories of chicken, pork, ribs and brisket, and judging will be conducted by a panel of Kansas City Barbecue Society-certified judges for award presentations.

Backyard grillers of ribs and chicken will compete Aug. 21.

The Kansas City Barbecue Society is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting and enjoying barbecue and is the largest organization of barbecue and grilling enthusiasts with more than 14,000 members nationwide.
