OAKLAND — A 40-year-old Oakland man was sentenced in Garrett County Circuit Court to 20 years in the Maryland Division of Correction for sexual abuse of a minor as a continuing course of conduct.
The name of the defendant was withheld by the Garrett County state’s attorney in an attempt to protect the identity of the victim.
The man pleaded guilty in September and Judge Jim Sherbin had ordered a presentence investigation at that time.
Maryland State Police obtained an arrest warrant in April after investigating allegations made by the victim that inappropriate acts had occurred in the defendant’s house over a number of years.
Child Protective Service investigators from the Department of Social Services also participated.
Other sentencings in circuit court included:
• Shawn Lee Gittere, 39, plead guilty to driving under the influence of alcohol and was sentenced to two years with all but three months suspended and fined $385. Related charges were dismissed and he will be on probation upon release.
Gittere was charged by Garrett County sheriff’s deputies in November 2009 after he had an accident along Hutton Road.
The case was heard recently because Gittere had failed to appear for trial in 2010 and a bench warrant was outstanding for almost two years before Gittere was arrested.
• Summer Joy Moss, 33, Grantsville, pleaded guilty to making a false statement to a police officer and was sentenced to 60 days suspended. Conditions of probation include community services and paying court costs.
Moss had falsely reported that money was stolen from her.
• Jehu Michael Fultz, 23, Tunnelton, W.Va., was sentenced in two unrelated cases. For a charge of theft scheme of under $1,000, he was sentenced to 18 months with six months suspended.
For driving uninsured, he was sentenced to two months, and for failing to notify owner of property damage accident, he was sentenced to three months. All sentences run consecutively for a total of 17 months. He will be on probation upon release.
Fultz had failed to pay for gasoline that was pumped multiple times. He also damaged the parish hall of St. Peter’s Catholic Church and left the scene of the accident.
