CUMBERLAND — A new street fair in South Cumberland, known as Celebrate the Avenue, begins today and will be held the last Saturday of each month through September.
Celebrate the Avenue is presented by Virginia Avenue businesses, residents and supporters from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. The road will be closed to automobile traffic from Second to Third Street from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. so that pedestrians can enjoy the vendors, food and drink, music and activities scheduled.
This month’s street fair will include music, sand art, pillows, jewelry, child and adult gifts, Pampered Chef, women’s apparel, photography, crafts, purses, billfolds, phone holders, candles, baskets, a white elephant table, hand massages, a bounce house, hula hoop contest, children’s games, a misting station, car wash, hot dogs, hamburgers, barbecued pulled pork, Caribbean jerk chicken, ice cream, itty bits, frozen coffee, snow cones, popcorn, cotton candy, sodas, water, contests, give-aways, promotions, coupons and special offers.
DJ Mark Golden will perform at Cahoots all day, and Eric Hanson at the Brick House Cafe from 2 to 4 p.m.
Hot Sauce Willie will be on the main stage from noon to 2 p.m. and the Acoustic Melons from 2 to 3 p.m.
Souls Won youth group will hold a car wash from 9 a.m. o 3 p.m. at the Allegany County Human Resources Development Commission parking lot.
Magic 100.5 will do a live remote broadcast, giving away an Alpine Lake Resort golf trip in the early hours of the fair. Super Liquors will offer wine tasting. Other businesses with special promotions include All About You Hair Salon, Kids Korner and Laura’s One Stop Hair Shop.
Many organizations have cooperated to make the events a reality including Cumberland street/maintenance, police, fire and economic development departments; South Cumberland Business & Civic Association; and Little Caesars. Cahoots, at 249 Virginia Ave., is the main sponsor.
