CUMBERLAND — A Midland man remained jailed on a quarter-million bond after he allegedly robbed the Midland Fireman’s Club early Saturday shortly before it closed for the night.
Sixty-five-year-old Alexander Denning Devault Jr. was charged with armed robbery, four counts each of first- and second-degree assault and reckless endangerment and a single count of theft over $500, according to the Allegany County Bureau of Police.
Following a bond hearing before a district court commissioner, Devault was jailed at the Allegany County Detention Center in lieu of $250,000 bond.
Police said Devault allegedly entered the club at 1:25 a.m., brandished a rifle and ordered the patrons to the floor before he stole money from the business and ran out the back door, according to the Allegany County Bureau of Police.
Information provided by witnesses led to Devault’s arrest a short time later at his residence in Midland, located a short distance from the Midland Fireman’s Club. The arrest was made without incident.
Police said the victims apparently recognized Devault, who has reportedly been inside the fireman’s club earlier in the evening for a short time.
Several hundred dollars allegedly stolen during the armed robbery was recovered at the time of the arrest. Police also recovered the weapon — a long rifle later determined to be a BB gun that resembled a .22-caliber rifle — and clothing used in the incident from a nearby wooded area, police said.
“This arrest was the result of quick police response, good witness information and excellent support and cooperation from Maryland State Police and the Lonaconing Police Department,” said Bureau of Police Chief J. Robert Dick. “The officers are to be commended for their professional response to the incident and their follow-up investigation.”
