This is an open letter to the citizens of Oldtown. Earlier this year, along with the Oldtown Volunteer Fire Department, we decided it would be nice to erect a gazebo in the town square on Opessa St. in Oldtown.
We have for many years mowed, decorated, trimmed and basically maintained this park on our own time and expense just because no one else did and since it is across the street from our house, we thought it would be a good project for us to undertake.
We take pride in making it look good, and apparently many people of Oldtown do appreciate looking at it, especially at Christmas when we light all of the trees, which is a big task itself, since all of the trees are getting quite tall.
To date, we have received very little support from anyone in the Oldtown area, with the exception of a few. I am not sure if people think we are not trustworthy, or simply have no community pride. At my own expense, I sent out letters to every organization in Oldtown as well as many citizens.
Some people from the community seem to think a veterans memorial not being erected in the park has something to do with not sending money for our project. I am not, nor is the OVFD involved in that other project, or the gathering of funds for it.
We take the beautification of this small park in our little town very seriously. It is important to us to do our small part in making Oldtown a nice place to visit. If there is someone out there who at any time wants to take over this project, just let us know, as we are getting old, and will not be able to do it forever.
If you would like to donate to this fund, please send any donation to OVFD Gazebo fund, 18912 Opessa St. Oldtown, Md, or to the OVFDA.

Not in the Bible, but the Communist Manifesto
President Obama has hit a new low. By promoting his reasoning for hiking taxes on the rich at the National Prayer Breakfast, he diminished the seriousness of his proposals and manipulated Jesus’ teachings for his own political purposes. How pathetic.

Argument for same-sex marriage is superficial
I am writing in response to a letter by Ian Stafford entitled, “Equal standards on marriage should be applied to everyone” (Feb. 3 Times-News).
The first thing I noticed about the article is the title. It appeared to be a Gov. O’Malley talking point repeated by his supporter to reframe the issue and promote his radical agenda. -
