I’m sure everyone has heard the proverb, “A stitch in time saves nine.” How very true this is when you put off doing a small job, and then later it become an elephant.
I’m referring to the bridge above New Page crossing Savage River. This bridge was constructed probably in the early 1900s. Nice piece of architecture, I’d say.
This bridge is in need of a stitch to preserve it for another 100 years, if done right. The bridge is of concrete construction, and has taken a lot of wear and tear over the years from traffic, and rock salt applied to the road during the winter months.
The traffic traveling this road during the winter months splash the salt slurry onto the concrete year after year, until the concrete has eroded away. Concrete structures need a sealant on them to protect them from the elements.
I know money is tight these days for performing and up keeping our roads in the counties. But, be that as it may, this bridge is a critical piece of Route 135 and should be repaired to its original structure.
Putting this project on the back burner only leads to higher costs later. It seems the counties are able to come up with monies for less important projects they see fit needs done. Like the mess that was made on Route 220 coming from Greene Street in Cumberland.
I appreciate the road work being done on Route 135, improving the shoulders. This stretch of road is hammered all day long by coal and wood trucks, not to mention all the other traffic.
I’m sure everyone who travels Route 135 and crosses the Savage River on this bridge would agree with me, this is something which should be addressed.
