Dear Ms. Thrasher:
Thank you for bringing to the attention of the Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) your concern about the safety at the intersection of Maryland routes 36 and 55 (“There’s also a dangerous dip in the roadway, Oct. 10 Times-News)
The SHA appreciates the opportunity to review your request regarding the sight/safety of this intersection.
The SHA follows the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials’ (AASHTO) A Policy on Geometric Design of Highways and Streets which provides federal standards for determining the vision distance required to safely travel through an intersection on all public roads.
Our engineers found the sight distance at this intersection to be in compliance with the latest standards set by AASHTO.
SHA acknowledges that the intersection on Route 36 has a natural over-vertical rise in the road while traveling southbound.
SHA engineers conducted a field study of this intersection and the results found the available sight distance to the south from MD 55 is 875 feet, which exceeds the recommended AASHTO sight distance of 665 feet.
In conclusion, studies show that this intersection had 14 recorded accidents in the last 11.6 years.
Even though the number of accidents is sustainably low, the SHA has upgraded the signage to enhance traffic control and notify the traveling public of the upcoming intersection.
