I attended the forum Monday night in Frostburg about the rash of recent break-ins and burglaries in the surrounding community.
Many thanks to Mayor Bob Flanigan, County Commissioner Michael McKay, Chief Royce Douty, Sheriff Craig Robertson and the other law enforcement officials who attended and made comments to the public.
They not only let us know more about the status of recent crimes, but also patiently answered numerous questions and provided us with common sense ways to protect ourselves, our families and our neighbors.
One of the best tips was to develop a simple plan with your neighbor to notify police in case you have a problem at your house at night:
Keep your car keys by your bedside and press the car alarm button if you hear an intruder. When your neighbor wakes up to investigate and notices that it is your car alarm, they will call 911 (and you should too, if you are able).
Wait for the police to arrive, stay on the phone with the dispatcher. Simple and effective. Thanks again to the local law enforcement agencies for keeping our neighborhoods safe.

Town of Westernport needs a police force and a curfew
Since the consolidation of Bruce and Valley high schools the town of Westernport rapidly deteriorated from what was once a quite respectable community to a community in a decline in residents, and along with that came a collapse in local government due to lack of knowledge and bad decisions that set the town of Westernport back 60 years.
One bad decision was to give up their police force, and with no constant visual law enforcement it has created an open range for drug dealerss, addicts, thieves, drunks and speeding vehicles that choose to ignore our city laws and speed limits and have totally disregard for the safety of the citizens who are on the streets, especially the children who are like deer, you don’t see them until their in front of you. -
