I am very disappointed in the Allegany County commissioners for caving in to the Board of Education’s demand for more money. The BOE is sticking their hands in our wallets since this money could be better used for other purposes in the county.
The BOE wants this high school (new Allegany) — well, they have to pay for it themselves and stop asking for more money every time they “discover” a shortage. Frankly I don’t trust them — I suspect they knew all along they needed more money and waited until the need became obvious and then went begging again to the county commissioners. The commissioners foolishly gave in.
Make no mistake — they will be back again with their begging bowl demanding more money for this high school. They need to curb their plans to meet their wallet like the rest of us do. There is no money tree in Allegany County. They need to stop going back to the commissioners.
The commissioners must say no to any future demands for extra funds for this high school. If the BOE runs out of money — then that is their problem. It is not mine, nor is it the county’s. BOE can cut some jobs, stop pay raises and make other budgetary economies so they can fund what they want. They must not be allowed to keep insisting the county has to make up for their lack of proper financial planning. The budget is set in the spring and the county should never increase BOE funding after that.
Like everyone else, the BOE needs to find out what things cost before they buy it and when the price goes up they need to find money from within their budget or do without — just like the rest of us.

Town of Westernport needs a police force and a curfew
Since the consolidation of Bruce and Valley high schools the town of Westernport rapidly deteriorated from what was once a quite respectable community to a community in a decline in residents, and along with that came a collapse in local government due to lack of knowledge and bad decisions that set the town of Westernport back 60 years.
One bad decision was to give up their police force, and with no constant visual law enforcement it has created an open range for drug dealerss, addicts, thieves, drunks and speeding vehicles that choose to ignore our city laws and speed limits and have totally disregard for the safety of the citizens who are on the streets, especially the children who are like deer, you don’t see them until their in front of you. -
