This time of year seems to bring out the best in most folks and I think that is one of the reasons I love the Christmas season.
I watch the Hallmark Christmas movies almost non-stop when they are on. I love feel-good movies and happy endings. This is the time of the year that hope seems to fill the air. This is the time when the birth of Jesus is celebrated by Christians everywhere around the globe.
And, although Jesus is the reason we celebrate Christmas, we also have millions of little children dreaming of the presents that Santa will bring them. It doesn’t get much better than seeing your child’s eyes light up while they are unwrapping their gifts while not even noticing or caring about the beautiful wrapping. Your children become giddy with happiness and that is a wonderful sight.
On that last note, I wish to explain to those opposed to dear ole Santa Claus why it is so important to keep him in the the celebration of Jesus’ birth. It does seem that Jesus might take a back seat to Santa but he really doesn’t. Every Christian knows the true meaning behind Christmas and that is what celebrate. Jesus was born and gave us hope. Santa gives the children hope.
Jesus wants us to love each other no matter what our differences are. Santa welcomes all the children to sit on his lap and tell him what is on their Christmas list. Just like Jesus, Santa loves everyone. So what if the stores seize the opportunity to make lots of money? Think about the employees that get hired for the Christmas season. Still nothing negative that I can see.
And while the store’s main concern is making lots of money they also donate to a lot of worthy causes. Who knows, maybe our Jesus looks down on us and is teary-eyed at the site of so much love and kindness during his birthday celebration. Maybe he adores the look on children’s faces as they stand in line waiting to sit on Santa’s lap. And just maybe Jesus adores Santa for what he stands for.
So I ask those who find it necessary to ruin a child’s fantasy of a jolly old man with a red suit and a beard who travels around the world guided by reindeer to deliver gifts, remember that Jesus and Santa have a lot in common. They both want folks to be kind and loving and they both bring a sense of joy and peace to those who believe.
So while Jesus is the reason for the celebration, Santa Claus is just helping to keep hope and joy alive in children who otherwise are hopeless and sad. How can that be a bad thing?
In closing I want to say, don’t be afraid to put Santa Claus in your front yard, just remember to always keep Jesus in your heart.
