The Meyersdale Area Watch Group (MAWG) commends its community for its active participation on Nov. 23-24 in “Small Business Saturday,” an event organized by the Meyersdale Area Merchants Association.
This event coincided with the American Express-sponsored national event that promoted “shop small.”
Meyersdale shoppers were encouraged to get seven “stamps” from different local businesses to be eligible for a grand prize of $360 in local gift certificates. Fourteen businesses participated and donated certificates.
Business owners reported many first-time visits to their stores as a result of the promotion. Forty-two shoppers submitted completed forms, an impressive thing considering the draw to the enticing Black Friday sales elsewhere.
Congressman-elect Keith Rothfus recently spoke at a special breakfast meeting about the importance of growing the local economy through supporting local businesses and creating a tax structure and government regulations that support growth of small businesses.
MAWG supports our community efforts to thrive and strongly urges the Meyersdale Borough Council to return its focus to “buying local.” Support of our local businesses includes service businesses such as engineering firms and law offices.
Recently, the Meyersdale Borough Council replaced the Somerset County-based solicitor and engineering firm with professionals from Hollidaysburg (Blair County). Now instead of a 20-mile commute, professionals that support our council will submit expenses for a 70-mile commute.
The MAWG seeks answers. What was broken? Why was it necessary to look outside of Somerset County for services; and what is the impact to the budget?

Town of Westernport needs a police force and a curfew
Since the consolidation of Bruce and Valley high schools the town of Westernport rapidly deteriorated from what was once a quite respectable community to a community in a decline in residents, and along with that came a collapse in local government due to lack of knowledge and bad decisions that set the town of Westernport back 60 years.
One bad decision was to give up their police force, and with no constant visual law enforcement it has created an open range for drug dealerss, addicts, thieves, drunks and speeding vehicles that choose to ignore our city laws and speed limits and have totally disregard for the safety of the citizens who are on the streets, especially the children who are like deer, you don’t see them until their in front of you. -

We’re twisting the meaning of the Founding Fathers’ words
I really had to chuckle when I read a recent comment someone made in a northeastern publication: “I’d like to suggest that Congress make a tiny change in our Second Amendment that would more accurately reflect the Founding Father’s intent (to wit): “A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear muskets, shall not be infringed.”
