CUMBERLAND — A 68-year-old former Allegany County man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for the March 2012 robbery of the First Peoples Federal Credit Union branch in Lonaconing.
Alexander Denning Devault Jr. of Pasadena was sentenced in Allegany County Circuit Court to 10 years in the Maryland Division of Correction for his conviction of the robbery of First Peoples Credit Union on March 16, 2012.
Devault entered the bank at about 2:40 p.m. and demanded money from the tellers. Shortly after leaving the bank with an undisclosed sum of money, Devault was walking along Douglas Avenue when he was apprehended by Deputy E. Stanley of the Allegany County Sheriff’s Office.
The stolen money was recovered at the time of the arrest.
The case was prosecuted by Allegany County State’s Attorney Michael Twigg. Devault was represented by Michael Stankan of the Public Defender’s Office.
As he remains jailed in Allegany County awaiting transfer to custody of state prison officials, Devault is also awaiting disposition of a felony bank robbery charge in Mineral County, W.Va.
Devault was indicted by a county grand jury in May on a felony bank robbery charge in connection with the Feb. 13, 2012, armed robbery of the First United Bank & Trust branch in Piedmont.
A detainer is on file to eventually return Devault to Mineral County to stand trial for the Piedmont bank robbery.
According to Maryland court documents, Devault was convicted in Allegany County Circuit Court of robbery in connection with the July 24, 2010, armed robbery of the Midland Firemen’s Club.
Devault was sentenced to four years with 2 1/2 years suspended and was placed on three years of supervised probation in that case.
In September 1994, Devault was arrested in the armed robbery of the First United branch in Grantsville.
He reportedly displayed a sawed-off shotgun, presented a plastic bag and demanded money before he ran from the bank to a nearby vehicle.
Minutes later, a Maryland State Police trooper stopped the suspect vehicle on U.S. Route 40 on the west end of Frostburg and took the suspect into custody. Frostburg Police and the C3I Unit also responded to the scene of the arrest,
Devault was later sentenced to a prison term of 25 years for the 1994 Garrett County bank robbery, according to court records.
