Officer shoots pit bulls after 3 people bitten

HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) — Hagerstown police say an officer shot two pit bulls that bit three people after one tried to bite him.

Police Sgt. Mark Renner says the officer was not injured. Renner tells The Herald-Mail of Hagerstown (http://tinyurl.com/d7zpqu6) that the officer’s “hand was forced” and he shot the dogs to protect himself and others.

Police say they got a call Sunday afternoon about two pit bulls running loose and attacking people. Police say a man, a woman and a girl were hospitalized with dog bites.

Police say the officer opened fire after one dog lunged at him and tried to bite him. Police say the bullet struck the animal in the back and the second dog in the mouth. The Washington County Humane Society says one of the dogs was euthanized.
