LAVALE — Fire destroyed the garage area at Athey’s Exxon station in the 1200 block of National Highway on Tuesday. The Allegany County 911 center alerted numerous volunteer fire companies to respond to the scene about 2:14 p.m.
A dispatcher at the center said employees were working on a car in the garage area when the car caught fire and flames then spread to the garage.
Deputy State Fire Marshal Mike Mattingly said the garage area was destroyed. He said it is too early for damage estimates, however, he said it will be some time before the station can resume providing services. The station was being leased by Jeremiah Custer. Units responding to the scene reported the service bays were engulfed in flames.
Volunteer fire companies responding to the scene included LaVale, Frostburg, Clarysville, Bowling Green, Corriganville, Ellerslie, Bedford Road and Midland. The LaVale Rescue Squad also responded.
No one was injured in the fire, which was out shortly after 5 p.m.
Maryland State Police, Allegany County Sheriff’s Office and the State Highway Administration responded to the scene for traffic control. National Highway through LaVale was shut down during the duration of the fire.
