CUMBERLAND — A Westernport man was arrested for allegedly charging various fuel purchases to local volunteer fire companies and a Barton man was charged in a separate investigation with assault, according to the Allegany County Sheriff’s Office.
Joseph A. Sweitzer, 23, was charged with theft scheme less than $1,000, theft less than $1,000 and various counts of theft less than $100 following his arrest Friday stemming from a sheriff’s office investigation.
Sweitzer, who was also cited for driving with license privileges suspended, remained jailed Monday at the Allegany County Detention Center in lieu of $3,500 bond.
Police said the charges against Sweitzer stemmed from alleged theft of $568.17 worth of fuel from the Pit-n-Go gas station.
The purchases of fuel, dating back to Dec. 21, were billed to various accounts of local volunteer fire companies and governments.
In a separate investigation, police arrested John L. Boore, 55, of Barton on Saturday following an alleged assault on Lower Georges Creek Road in Barton.
Boore was charged with second-degree assault and vulnerable adult abuse. He remained jailed Monday on $20,000 bond at the Allegany County Detention Center.
The victim was taken to the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, ac-cording to the sheriff’s office.
