RIDGELEY, W.Va. — A family of seven was left homeless and one firefighter was injured when fire swept through a mobile home on Knobley Road Extended early Tuesday.
None of the occupants was injured in the 12:13 a.m. incident in which arriving firefighters quickly called for assistance to handle a “working fire.” The identities of the occupants were not available.
A Ridgeley firefighter was injured in a fall from a porch during the fire operation, according to a Ridgeley Volunteer Fire Department spokes-man.
The unidentified firefighter was taken to the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center by Ridgeley ambulance and was released after being examined in the emergency room.
West Virginia State Fire Marshal’s Office returned to the scene Wednesday to investigate the cause and origin of the blaze.
A Ridgeley fire official said the fire originated near the main entrance of the mobile home.
The property loss was estimated at $25,000 to the dwelling and $5,000 to its contents, according to a Ridgeley fire department official.
The Mineral County 911 center reported fire companies from Ridgeley, Wiley Ford, Short Gap, Bowling Green, Cresaptown, Corriganville, Frostburg, Shaft, Bedford Road and Cumberland responded. Some units were on the call for four hours.
Ridgeley Police Department controlled traffic in the area of Alternate Route 28 at the outskirts of town.
Mineral County Sheriff’s Department responded for assistance in the investigation.
The American Red Cross provided emergency assistance to the victims to replace clothes, food and other essentials.
“Our caseworkers will continue to follow up with the family to make sure all of their immediate needs are met,” said Red Cross spokesman Doug Lent.
