LITTLE ORLEANS — Weather hampered efforts by Little Orleans and other firefighters to douse a Saturday morning house fire in Fulton County, Pa., early Saturday morning.
An addition to the single-story home was destroyed and the main section of the home was gutted by flames, said Orleans Chief John Clingerman.
“We couldn’t make good time; it was hammering down snow,” Clingerman said.
Firefighters were called to the 4416 Buck Valley Road address at 5:20 a.m. and only left the scene about 10:30 a.m. The Little Orleans Fire Department has primary responsibility for the area of Pennsylvania in which the fire occurred, even though it is across state lines, said Clingerman.
“We cover a lot of Pennsylvania,” he said.
A family of five escaped the fire and was being aided by the Red Cross, which Clingerman called to the scene. The family lost all their personal belongings, the chief said. The home contained working smoke alarms. No one was injured.
When Clingerman arrived at the scene and established his command post the fire was fully involved at both the main home and the addition.
Also damaged were a small structure nearby and a 2003 Ford pickup truck.
While Pennsylvania State Police and Pennsylvania fire marshals will investigate the fire, Clingerman said he does not think the fire was suspicious.
Thirty-eight firefighters were on the scene. In addition to Little Orleans, fire departments from Hancock, Needmore, Berkeley Springs, Flintstone and Great Cacapon were present.
Also assisting were Air 25 from Hagerstown and Rehab Unit 255. The Hancock Rescue Squad was on standby. The home was insured; no dollar estimate for the losses was available by press time.
