BLOOMINGTON — As many as 76 coal cars derailed on CSX tracks above Bloomington early Monday but without any injuries, according to unconfirmed reports late Monday afternoon.
Garrett County 911 reported Allegany County 911 was handling the incident. However, an Allegany County 911 dispatcher said they received notification of the matter by Garrett County 911 but no first-response units were sent to the scene.
The Mineral County 911 Center at Keyser, W.Va., reported at early afternoon that there was an initial report at 1:38 a.m. of a “runaway train but that it was apparently brought under control — there was no derailment,” in response to a Times-News inquiry.
However, unnamed CSX employees provided information to the Times-News that a derailment had occurred in the area of milepost 213, about three miles above state Route 135 at Bloomington.
Callers who claimed to have knowledge of the incident said 76 cars loaded with coal derailed and two engines remained standing on the tracks. The train crew apparently was not injured.
Repeated efforts to contact the CSX corporate headquarters in Jacksonville and the National Transportation Safety Board were unsuccessful.
The location of Monday’s incident is just a few miles from that of a 36-car derailment on Jan. 30, 2000, that destroyed a nearby occupied residence, claiming the life of 15-year-old Eddie Lee Rogers. Four other members of his family were injured in the crash that caused property damages estimated at more than $3 million, according to the NTSB.
