ACCIDENT — An eighth-grade student has been arrested in connection with Tuesday’s bomb threat at Northern Middle School, according to Maryland State Police.
The 14-year-old was arrested on a charge of making a false statement of a destructive device.
Police said the offense is a felony that could result in a penalty ranging from probation to commitment to a juvenile services detention facility.
The youth was placed in the custody of juvenile officials after being taken to the state police barrack at McHenry.
The school was evacuated at about 9 a.m. Tuesday when a message was discovered on a bathroom stall indicating a bomb was inside the school and it would detonate.
A search of the premises following the evacuation was conducted by Maryland State Police K-9 units and the Garrett County Sheriff’s Office. School personnel also conducted a room-by-room search and the scene was processed by state police evidence collection specialists.
No explosive devices were found.
Students had been evacuated to Northern High School but were allowed to return at about 1 p.m. after police deemed it safe.
Accident Volunteer Fire Department and Northern Garrett Rescue Squad also responded.
