CUMBERLAND — With state approval of partial funding for the new Allegany High School, the local school board will now be able to select an architect and engineering firm, according to a press release from Allegany County Public Schools.
“We are very excited that the new Allegany High School project has been approved for partial funding by the Board of Public Works,” said Superintendent of Schools David Cox. “I am very eager now to begin the design phase with the selection of our architect and engineering firm.”
The state’s Public School Construction Program recently notified the school system that the Maryland Board of Public Works approved, for partial funding, various capital improvement projects recommended by the Interagency Committee on School Construction.
In addition to the Allegany High project, partial funding for the roof replacement at Westmar Middle School and total funding for 15 lighting retrofit projects were approved.
Gov. Martin O’Malley has included money for the projects in his proposed capital budget for fiscal 2014.
The total cost of the Allegany project is projected to be $41.4 million, with $27.936 million to be covered by the state, according to Mia Perlozzo Cross, public relations specialist for the board.
Funding the project in fiscal 2014 locks in a 93/7 split of state and local funds for the entire project, according to Cox.
A new funding split will be in effect for fiscal 2016, with the state’s share expected to decline.
