SPRING GAP — State Route 51 was shut down about a quarter-mile from the Spring Gap Post Office on Thursday morning when a tractor-trailer hauling 22 tons of fertilizer overturned. The driver was not injured and was out of the rig and walking around when first-responders arrived at the scene following alert at about 10:10 a.m.
“Initially it was thought the truck contained coal but it was actually 22 1/2 tons of black fertilizer,” said a dispatcher at the Allegany County 911 center.
Units remained at the scene an hour after the crash, awaiting removal of the rig by Furlow’s Towing and cleanup of about 11 tons of the fine black powder material that spilled from the rig. A State Highway Administration front-end loader was also sent to transfer the spilled material into another truck.
The crash reportedly occurred about 300 feet from Collier Run Road, prompting response of the Allegany County Hazardous Incident Response Team, Maryland State Police patrol and Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division personnel, State Highway Administration, and volunteers from Oldtown, District 16 and LaVale fire and ambulance companies.
