CUMBERLAND — A city man was arrested late Friday night after he allegedly robbed the Circle K convenience store.
The suspect was arrested in the area a short time later as he attempted to flag down a taxi cab.
Cumberland Police said 34-year-old Shawn Holloway Sr. matched the description of the suspect and was positively identified by store employees following the 11:16 p.m. robbery of the store located in the 900 block of East Oldtown Road.
Police said Holloway displayed a knife when he demanded money from the cash register.
One of the employees reportedly struck the suspect from behind before both store workers ran from the building, police said. The suspect then opened the cash register and removed an unspecified sum of money.
A description of the suspect, who was wearing dark clothing and a hood pulled tightly over his face, was broadcasted by Cumberland Police.
Responding police units reportedly located Holloway several blocks away from the store as he attempted to stop a taxi cab.
Police said Holloway matched the broadcasted description.
He was taken into custody as a possible suspect and was treated at the scene by Cumberland Fire Department ambulance personnel. Holloway declined further treatment.
Further investigation by Cumberland Police, with assistance of the C3I Unit, Maryland State Police patrol and aviation units and evidence collection specialists, led to Holloway’s arrest.
Charged with armed robbery, first- and second-degree assault, theft, deadly weapon with intent to injure and reckless endangerment, Holloway remained jailed Saturday on $275,000 bond set by a district court commissioner, pending bail review Monday in district court.
Maryland court records indicated at least two other theft cases pending against Holloway in Allegany County.
The Friday night incident marked the second armed robbery of the Circle K convenience store in less than three weeks.
On Nov. 29, a suspect armed with a knife robbed a clerk of an undisclosed sum of money before running from the business.
No arrests have been made in that incident, which remains under investigation by Cumberland Police and the C3I Unit.
Numerous armed robberies have occurred over recent years at the East Oldtown Road convenience store that formerly operated as a Dairy Mart store.
