MOOREFIELD, W.Va. — East Hardy became the first team in the Bub Riggleman Memorial Tournament not to lose by the 10-run rule to Class AAA powerhouse Jefferson, but it still came up short in the championship game, 5-1, Saturday night.
Jefferson jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the first two innings before the game turned into a pitchers’ duel over the remaining five innings.
Jefferson made it 5-0 with a run in the fifth and East Hardy scored in the top of the seventh when Laura Orndorff’s RBI single brought home Emily Biller from second. Biller, who had two of the team’s three hits, led off the inning with a double.
Jefferson’s Rebecca Lanham led all hitters with three base hits in three plate appearances.
Tiffany Biggs and Katie Mongold combined to strike out 10 for Jefferson.
In the semifinal game, Lyndsey Basye lined a base hit down the third-base line to score Molly Look with the game-winning run in the seventh inning of the Cougars’ 5-4 victory over Berkeley Springs.
Basye and Look each had two of the team’s 10 hits. Basye was 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs. Look also was 2-for-4 with a double.
Berkeley Springs took a short-lived 1-0 lead in the top of the third before East Hardy scored two in the bottom of the inning to go up 2-1. The Cougars scored twice in the fifth to take a 4-1 lead. The Indians, however, tied it with three runs in the sixth.
On Friday, Ashley Dove doubled home the tying and winning runs in the bottom of the seventh to beat Frankfort 6-5. Dove added a single and had a total of three runs batted in. Basye had a triple and a single with one RBI.
The Cougars scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to pull to 6-4 and got the final two runs in the seventh. Look allowed four hits, and one earned run, while striking out six for the win.
Frankfort got RBI singles from Jasmine Morgan and Jessica Jenkins.
East Hardy beat Lewis County 6-1 in the second game of the day, getting a two-run home run and three RBIs from Biller. Basye had another solid showing with a double, two singles and two runs batted in. Basye was also the winning pitcher, allowing no earned runs and one hit while getting seven strikeouts.
East Hardy placed three girls on the All-Tournament team. They were Dove, Look and Basye.
Thirteen teams participated in the tournament.
East Hardy (10-3) was scheduled to play Keyser Monday with the varsity game following the 4:30 p.m. junior varsity game.
