HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. — Winning pitcher Shari Beavers doubled home a pair of runs in the seventh inning as Fort Hill ended Hedgesville’s three-year home winning streak, 3-1, in high school softball on Saturday.
The second-ranked Sentinels (9-1) also beat Thomas Johnson behind an exceptional game from Cierra Miller, 3-2 in eight innings, to stretch their winning streak to eight games.
Tied 1-1 in the first game, Lindsey Fisher singled and Kat Huber reached on an error to start the seventh-inning rally. Beavers doubled to right center to score both to give the Sentinels a 3-1 lead.
Beavers got the win, allowing five hits and no walks while striking out 11 in a pitchers duel with Hedgesville’s Jess Shirley, who allowed six hits, walked one and fanned 15.
Beavers doubled and singled for Fort Hill and Sam Nazelrod had three singles for Hedgesville (10-3).
In the second game, tied 2-2, Beavers started the bottom of the eighth on second base, stole third and scored on Olivia Stanley’s game-winning line drive to center field.
Miller got the win with an eight-inning three-hitter. She walked only two and struck out 18.
Catcher Adria Lewis had three singles and threw out two TJ baserunners, while Fisher had two singles.
Beavers, Lewis, Miller and Stanley had consecutive singles in the fourth to help Fort Hill tie it 1-1. Alyssa Yost’s RBI single gave the Sentinels a 2-1 lead in the sixth. Thomas Johnson (6-5) scored a run in the seventh to force the extra inning.
In the day’s other game, Hedgesville beat Thomas Johnson 8-6 with a three-run homer in the seventh inning.
Fort Hill plays again at Keyser on Tuesday.

Bishop Walsh 6
FREDERICK — Bishop Walsh stranded 15 runners and left the bases loaded four times as the Spartans fell at the Maryland School for the Deaf Saturday.
The Spartans got a total of six hits, with Anne Mathews and Erin McGee both getting one-run singles. Bishop Walsh had the bases jammed when its inning ended in the second, third, fourth and seventh innings.
Maryland Deaf had just five hits, with pitcher Mansfield and catcher Lewis both getting a double and a single.
Mansfield combined with Benedict for nine strikeouts. McGee had four for BW.
The Spartans will finish their City League schedule on Wednesday when they play Fort Hill at Northcraft, at 4:30.

Southern 2
OAKLAND — Hampshire put up a six-run fourth inning to separate itself from Southern en route to a five-run win in the AMAC match-up at Broadford Park.
Kasey Patterson struck out seven and issued no walks to earn the win. She allowed four singles to separate hitters.
Brittany Moreland led the Trojans with a triple and three runs batted in. Karisa Saville, Catherine Wood and Ashley Centofonti all had RBI singles.
Alycia Horner had an RBI single, and struck out seven while walking four in the loss.
The Trojans (5-9, 3-5 AMAC) play Tuesday at Frankfort. Southern (2-5, 2-4) hosts Mountain Ridge on Tuesday.
