FROSTBURG — With an early season edge in the Appalachian Mountain Athletic Conference on the line, Kelsey Robertson was overpowering after the first inning and allowed Mountain Ridge to beat Allegany 4-2 Thursday at Mount Pleasant Field.
Allegany scored two runs in the top of the first inning when Beth Szymanski singled and Hilary Lyons slugged a home run over the right field fence. The Campers were held off the board and had only an occasional base runner from that point.
Robertson finished with 10 strikeouts and just one walk, while her counterpart Hayley Stankan recorded seven strikeouts and allowed only four hits.
Miranda Nicol was trumpeted for her all-around play by Miners Head Coach Martha Mauzy.
“Miranda had a huge day. She was outstanding in the field, and was big at the plate as well. She hit the ball hard, and was a great catch away from having an even better day.”
Nicol sent a solo home run over the right field fence in the second inning to get the Miners to 2-1. Mountain Ridge tied the score in the fourth inning, and had a chance for more when Nicol hit a ball that was on its way to being a grand slam. A jumping catch from Szymanski saved the Campers for the moment.
“We really had a chance to break the game open at that point,” said Mauzy. “It was a great catch on the center fielder’s part, and was another part of a great softball game.”
The Miners scored their final two runs in the fifth inning off of a sacrifice fly and an error on the throw.
Mountain Ridge and Allegany were the only two unbeatens left in the AMAC. The Miners (6-0 overall, AMAC) will play host to Southern on Saturday at noon. Allegany (9-1, 7-1) will play Keyser at home on Monday.
Fort Hill 6

CUMBERLAND — Olivia Stanley hit a solo home run in the fifth and Shari Beavers pitched a one-hitter to lead Fort Hill to a victory over Southern in an Appalachian Mountain Athletic Conference softball game at Long Field.
Beavers struck out 10 Southern hitters, and also excelled at the plate with two triples, knocking in a run and scoring a run.
Southern’s run in the third was unearned and scored when Morgan Rafferty scored on a Fort Hill throwing error. The Sentinels have yet to give up an earned run this season, according to coach Mike Bittner.
“It’s amazing we haven’t given up an earned run,” said Bittner, “but the bad thing there is we’re committing too many errors. We have to put a stop to that.”
Southern pitcher Alycia Horner went the distance, giving up just six hits and striking out 10.
Fort Hill (6-1 overall, 4-1 AMAC) will play at undefeated Mountain Ridge Monday at 4:30 p.m. Southern (2-2, 2-2) will host Petersburg Monday at 4 p.m.
In the jayvee game, Fort Hill defeated Southern 6-2. Kayla Hutson and Mariah James each had two hits. Hutson had a single and a double and James two singles.
Southern had three girls each hit a single.
Winning pitcher Courtney Koelker had five strikeouts and Kendra Hardesty had seven for Southern.
The Sentinel jayvees are now 7-0 and play Mountain Ridge at Mount Pleasant field Monday.
Keyser 10
Hampshire 1
ROMNEY, W.Va. — Keyser used two four-run innings, and freshman Meghan Anderson limited Hampshire to one run in the Golden Tornado’s win over the host Trojans in the AMAC.
Keyser (4-2, 3-2 AMAC) will go for its third straight win today at home against Hampshire. Hampshire (3-8, 1-4) will play a doubleheader at Bishop Walsh at noon on Saturday.
Brooke Mangold collected two singles for the Tornado, and was the only Keyser player with multiple hits. Keyser had seven total hits, and used 12 Hampshire errors to help score the 10 runs.
For Hampshire, Kasey Patterson hit a pair of singles, and Dana Veach hit an RBI single.
Anderson had nine strikeouts and allowed one walk in the win.
East Hardy 6
Martinsburg 4
MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — Lauren Orndorff and Ashley Dove went 3-for-4 with two runs batted in to lead East hardy past hosting Martinsburg Thursday evening.
Orndorff hit two doubles and a single to get her two RBIs, and Dove singles three times for hers. Dove also scored a pair of runs.
Molly Look also went 2-for-4 for the Cougars, and was also the winning pitcher after collecting eight strikeouts and walking three. She allowed just one earned run.
Jessica Russ had two hits and a RBI for The Bulldogs, and had 13 strikeouts as the losing pitcher.
The undefeated Cougars, 6-0, will play Monday in the Glenville Invitational.
Junior Varsity
Allegany 11
Mountain Ridge 8
FROSTBURG — Stephanie Dawson hit a grand slam and was the winning pitcher during Allegany’s 11-8 win over Mountain Ridge in junior varsity softball.
Dawson added a double and a single to her slam and had four runs batted in. Miranda Shank hit a double, Alexis Sivic hit a double and a single and Emily Van Meter singled twice. Lindsie Linaburg added a double and a single.
For the Miners, Alexa Gallagher and Maggie Wilson hit a double. Amber Ravenscroft had two singles, and Shayna Sweitzer had two doubles and a single.
Now 5-1, Mountain Ridge plays Southern at Mount Pleasant on Saturday.
