CUMBERLAND — Shari Beavers and Cierra Miller combined for a no-hitter and 18 strikeouts as Fort Hill won its long-awaited softball season opener, beating Bishop Walsh 9-0 in a City and Appalachian Mountain Athletic Conference game Saturday at Riverside.
The Sentinels had a March 21 doubleheader at Hampshire rescheduled and a Thursday home game with Keyser canceled. As a result, coach Mike Bittner’s defending league and Class 1A state champions will open the season with three straight City League games.
Beavers, a senior, pitched the first four innings and Miller, a junior, worked the final three in the no-hitter.
Beavers hurled four perfect innings and got 10 of the 12 outs with strikeouts. Miller fanned eight in the final three innings, walked one and hit one.
Of the 21 outs recorded, there were 18 strikeouts, two groundouts and one fly out.
The Sentinels led 1-0 until scoring three times in the third and three times in the fourth.
Adria Lewis led a 10-hit attack with three singles and four runs batted in. Beavers had a double, single and two RBIs, and Olivia Stanley two singles and an RBI.
Fort Hill will host Allegany on Monday, at Long Field, at 4:30, and will face Bishop Walsh again on Wednesday at Cavanaugh.
BW (1-2, 0-1 City, 0-2 AMAC) hosts Northern on Tuesday at 5:15 at Cavanaugh.
Allegany 5, Hampshire 0
CRESAPTOWN — Haley Stankan threw a four-hit shutout as Allegany remained undefeated by beating Hampshire on Friday for its third straight Appalachian Mountain Athletic Conference victory.
Stankan struck out seven and walked three in going the distance. She worked out of bases-loaded jams in the first and third innings, and did not allow a baswerunner after the third.
Allegany (3-0 overall, 3-0 AMAC) finished with 12 hits, with Haylie Harper leading the way with a double, two singles and an RBI. Katie Alkire had a double, single and an RBI, and Jenna Mathews smacked an RBI double.
Karissa Saville hit a double for the only extra-base hit for Hampshire (2-3, 1-2).
The Campers will play Fort Hill in their City League opener Monday at Long Field. Hampshire also plays Monday at East Hardy.

CUMBERLAND — Mary Valentine homered and teamed with winning pitcher Courtney Koelker on a three-hitter with 12 strikeouts to lead the Fort Hill jayvees to a season-opening win over Bishop Walsh at Riverside.
Valentine was the game’s top hitter with a homer and three singles. Rachel Greise homered and singled, Allison McIntosh and Maddie Wilson doubled and singled, and Hannah Lowery singled twice for the Sentinels.
Koelker, the starting pitcher, and Valentine allowed only three singles.
