FROSTBURG — Alycia Horner scored 13 points and Heidi Welch and Alli Shaffer had 10 as fourth-seeded Southern defeated fifth-seeded Fort Hill, 56-36, in their Class 1A West section playoff game Tuesday at Mountain Ridge.
The first-round was scheduled to have been played at Southern on Friday but was postponed repeatedly because of snow and snow removal at the Oakland school, then was moved to the neutral court of Mountain Ridge.
The Rams (16-6) play at top-seeded and arch rival Northern in the sectional semifinals tonight at 7 o’clock. The winner of tonight’s game will play second-seeded Allegany for the section title on Thursday.
Southern, having little time on the court since its final regular season game a week ago, finally warmed up in the fourth quarter last night to pull away from the Sentinels (6-14).
It was tied 23-23 at halftime and Southern led 37-31 after three periods before outscoring Fort Hill 20-5 in the final quarter.
Welch had five points and Shaffer four in the 20-point fourth, and Emillee Bosley scored all seven of her points in the third quarter for the Rams.
Destiny James scored 12 points, Sam Frankenberry had 10 and Alyssia Twigg nine for Fort Hill.
