Carpenter a consenous selection

Alco kicker all-state for all four classes

BALTIMORE — Allegany High School kicker John Carpenter was one of three kickers named to the Maryland Consensus All-State Team announced last week by ESPNRise.com.

Carpenter, a senior, is one of two place-kickers and one of three players that could have made the team as either a place-kicker or punter.

Carpenter was a perfect eight of eight on field goals with a long of 43 yards. He also hit on 42 of 43 extra points. As a junior, Carpenter converted six of nine field goals. He is being recruited by several Division I programs.

Arundel’s Billy Cosh and Good Counsel’s Louis Young were voted by the media as the Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year, respectively.

The 2009 team marks the first time in 10 years that three kickers make the Consensus Team.

Previous Consensus Teams consist of some of the top recruits in Maryland and this year is no different. Almost every player on the team is already committed to college or holds multiple offers.

Maryland and Iowa have the most recruits, with both schools getting three commitments. The range of schools is an impressive list, with players committing to California, Kansas State, Michigan, Penn State and Stanford among others.

This is the 18th year of the media All-State team in Maryland.

The Consensus Team, along with Players and Coaches of the Year, will be honored at the All-State banquet Feb. 13 at M&T; Bank Stadium.
