BW booters play to draw

— HAGERSTOWN — Bishop Walsh and St. Maria Goretti battled through two 40-minute halves but neither could crack the other’s defense and settled for a 0-0 tie in high school boys soccer on Saturday.

Bishop Walsh held a 19-14 edge in shots and both teams had four corner kicks.

It was the second shutout in as many starts for the Spartans defense.

“Although we didn’t score, we felt we put a lot of pressure on Goretti, and we were happy with the way the offense played,’’ said BW coach Joe Rowan. “The defense continues to be tough. We knew we would be strong on defense with all three defenders and our goalkeeper returning.”

Brandon Kimble made 12 saves in goal for BW and John Winalski had 10 for Goretti.

The junior varsity game also ended in a 0-0 tie. Lucas Bruck had 14 goalie saves for the Spartans.

Bishop Walsh (1-0-1) will host Pendleton County on Monday, in a varsity only matchup, at 4:30.

Hampshire drops pair

ROMNEY, W.Va. — Locked in a scoreless duel at halftime, Musselman erupted for five second-half goals to defeat Hampshire, 5-0, on Saturday.

Jordan Butts scored first for the Applemen, in the 41st minute. Johnstone scored the next two, at the 41st and 70th minutes, and Butler scored twice in the final 10 minutes.

Musselman led in shots 22-2 and in corner kicks 10-0. Josh Vickery made nine saves in goal for Hampshire.

Thursday evening, Derrick Clark scored a pair of first-half goals and Tristen Reid, Tim Sabol and Eric Ocnok scored in the second, lifting Martinsburg to a 5-0 win over Hampshire.

The Bulldogs held a commanding 27-4 edge in shots and also led in corner kicks 6-1. Josh Vickery made eight saves and Isaak Lambert two saves in goal for Hampshire. Jason Hill had one for Martinsburg.

Hampshire (0-5) visits Bishop Walsh on Wednesday at 3:30.
