Fort Hill’s Dunlap, Absher win region title

— FREDERICK — In a rematch of the Bi-County girls doubles finals, Fort Hill’s Tasha Dunlap and Nikki Absher met up with Allegany’s Amber Beckman and Olivia Umpierre, but unlike the Bi-County it was the Sentinel duo coming out on top to capture the Maryland Region I Tennis Championship  Saturday at Baker Park.

All four girls in the doubles championship qualified for the Maryland State Tournament that begins Friday at the University of Maryland-College Park. The four will be joined by Fort Hill’s Jessica Currence and Allegany’s Gary George, who qualified as an alternate.

The doubles final lasted three sets, with Allegany winning the first 6-4. Fort Hill won the second, 6-3, and the deciding set was 7-6 with a 7-5 tie-breaker. Beckman and Umpierre won the Bi-County match, which is used as a qualifier for the regional.

Dunlap and Absher advanced to the finals by beating top-seeded Alice D’Aluaro and Erin Scally of Boonsboro in the semifinals, 6-3 and 6-2. Beckman and Umpierre beat Miranda Kearney and Becky Schrimsher of Clear Spring, 6-4 and 6-2.

Jessica Currence finished second in girls singles after falling to Tuscarora’s Ana Chernova 6-2, 7-5 in the finals for her only loss this season. Currence beat Staci Brewbaker 6-3 and 6-0 in the semifinals, and takes a 23-1 record to the state tournament.

Allegany’s George lost his semifinal match to top-seeded Mike Lesko from Linganore, 6-0 and 6-2. He won the third-place match by beating Peter Shuck of Tuscarora 6-2 and 6-3.
