FROSTBURG — Stephanie Fazenbaker scored in the first half and Shyler Phillips scored in the second as top-ranked Mountain Ridge beat third-ranked Fort Hill, 2-0, for a second straight perfect regular season Monday night in high school girls soccer.
The victory sends coach Martha Mauzy’s team into the West Region playoffs with a 14-0-0 record. It also extended the Miners’ regular-season winning streak to 28 games.
The shutout was the 10th for goalie Heather Shipe, tying the single-season area record also held by Allegany’s Lyndsie Twigg (2004) and Kacey Kahl of Beall (2003).
Mountain Ridge, which clinched the Appalachian Mountain Athletic Conference championship with the win, has held the No. 1 spot in the area poll every week of the regular season.
“It’s kind of phenomenal to have completed two undefeated (regular) seasons in a row. We have a great group of kids that work hard and deserve all the recognition they get,’’ said Mauzy. “And they’re not only good athletes, they’re good students, too.”
Fort Hill (9-5, 6-2 AMAC), which had lost to Mountain Ridge 8-0 in an earlier non-conference game, would have won a share of the conference title with a win. The Sentinels trailed by just 1-0 at halftime.
Fazenbaker scored the goal on an assist from Lauren Filer 11:57 before halftime for the Miners (8-0 AMAC).
Phillips got a much-needed insurance goal on an assist from Fazenbaker with 25:56 left in the second half.
Mountain Ridge led 20-5 in shots and 6-3 in corner kicks. Shipe made four saves in goal for the Miners, and Alyssa McTaggart had 10 for the Sentinels.
The Mountain Ridge jayvees won, 3-0, and also finished the season undefeated with a 9-0-1 record.
Shae Winner, Jocelyn Hoffman and Karlee Africa scored goals. Winner had two assists and Samantha Bennett one.
The West Region playoffs begin Thursday, but third-seeded Fort Hill and top-seeded Mountain Ridge have first-round byes.
In the quarterfinals, Fort Hill will play Boonsboro on Tuesday at 3:30 at Greenway Avenue Stadium. Mountain Ridge will host the winner of Thursday’s Hancock-Smithsburg game on Tuesday, at 6 o’clock, at Mountain Ridge.
