FROSTBURG — The meeting of the top two teams in area girls soccer didn’t disappoint as No. 1 Mountain Ridge was able to hold off No. 2 Northern and grab a 4-3 win to remain undefeated with one regular season contest left Wednesday night at Mountain Ridge.
The Huskies looked to take control when Kaitlyn Fratz scored an unassisted goal 2:04 into the first half. It would take almost 28 minutes for Quincy Hegeman to tie it at 1-1 with an unassisted goal of her own.
The Miners used two straight goals to take a 3-1 lead in the second half. Hegeman assisted Shyler Phillips with 28:42 to play, and Stephanie Fazenbaker wasted little time in adding the next goal at 27:00.
Northern’s Sydney McFarland was assisted by Adria Graham to make it 3-2 before Fazenbaker scored again to make it 4-2. Graham got the final point with 1:28 remaining, and McFarland assisting.
Mountain Ridge held a slight edge (13-12) in shots, and had one corner kick, which was one more than Northern.
Heather Shipe had seven saves in allowing her first goal since Sept. 17. Brittany Mallow had four saves for Northern.
Shay Winner scored on an Abby Beal pass to lead the Miners to a 1-0 win in the junior varsity contest.
Mountain Ridge (13-0) can win the Appalachian Mountain Athletic Conference outright by beating visiting Fort Hill Monday during Senior Night. The Miners are already assured of a tie if they lose. Northern finished the regular season at 12-2, with both losses coming to Mountain Ridge.

SHORT GAP, W.Va. — Frankfort’s defense did its job and the Falcons needed just one goal to top Keyser for a West Virginia Class AA Sectional championship played Wednesday in Short Gap.
The Falcons (11-3-3) will be off until Thursday, Oct. 29 when they will begin play in the regional playoffs at Martinsburg. Their opponent has yet to be determined.
Bria Welker was assisted by Ashley Hayes at 37:25 of the second half for the only offense. Stefani Shingle needed to make only three saves in recording the shutout. Kayla Broadwater made five saves as the Keyser goalie.
The Falcons carried a 12-8 advantage in shots taken, and led 3-2 in corner kicks.
Keyser finishes the season at 9-5-3.
Fort Hill 6

CUMBERLAND — Leah Yurko had a hat trick in the first half and added a fourth goal in the second as Fort Hill wrapped up its first perfect season in the City League by beating Bishop Walsh Wednesday evening at Greenway Avenue Stadium.
Yurko scored the first three goals, and had the first four for the Sentinels. She first scored at 33:04 on an unassisted goal, and then at 32:20 on an assist from Destiny James. Yurko then recorded an unassisted goal with 29:34 remaining before Chenoa Zais got the Spartans on the board with an unassisted goal.
Yurko opened the second half with her third unassisted goal, and then Mariah James scored two consecutive goals to push the Fort Hill lead to 6-1. Katherine Dwyer score the final goal with 14:11 left.
Fort Hill held an 18-8 advantage in shots, and led 6-2 in corner kicks. Alyssa McTaggart had one save while working the first half, and Ashlee Stumbaugh had three in the second. Caroline Hughes had eight saves for the Spartans.
“This is the first time that Fort Hill has gone undefeated in the city,” said Head Coach Shera Rowan. “The girls set this as one of their goals at the beginning of the year, and have worked really hard to achieve it. I’m very proud of them.”
Ashlan Thompson, Brandi Malloy and Ashley O’Neal had the goals in Fort Hill’s 3-1 jayvee win. Julia Morin scored BW’s.
The Sentinels (9-4) finish the regular season with an Appalachian Mountain Athletic Conference game at Mountain Ridge on Monday. A win or tie will give Fort Hill a share of the league title. Bishop Walsh (5-13, 1-3 City) begins the Private School State Tournament on Saturday.
