Fratz, Northern overpower Fort Hill, 65-48

CUMBERLAND — Area-scoring leader Kaitlynn Fratz hit for a game-high 29 points to lead No. 1 Northern over Fort Hill 65-48 Wednesday night at Fort Hill High School.

Fratz hit nine field goals, including three 3-pointers, and was 8-of-10 from the line for her total. Terra McKenzie added 12 points and Adria Graham scored nine.

Fort Hill was paced by Maria James career-high 17 points. She had six buckets, with three 3-pointers as well, and made 2-of-3 from the free-throw line. She was the only Sentinel to score in double figures. She also had six rebounds and dished out four assists.

Ashley O’Neal added eight points and Alyssia Twigg had seven. Destiny James and Mollie Mandell both scored six.

Northern (17-2 overall, 12-1 Appalachian Mountain Athletic Conference) led by seven after the first period, was up four at halftime, 31-27, then put the game away with a 21-6 third period.

Fort Hill won the junior varsity game 34-33 on Alesha Jackson’s game-winning basket at the buzzer. She finished with 12 points and Leah Yurko added eight. Lauren Yeager scored a game-high 15 points for Northern.

The Huskies visit Mountain Ridge Monday while Fort Hill (5-11) host Hampshire, also tonight.

FROSTBURG — Heather Shipe poured in 20 points and freshman Shae Winner had a big night with 16 points and 14 rebounds to power fifth-ranked Mountain Ridge over visiting Keyser.

Shipe hit eight field goals and 3-of-4 free throws in leading the Miners, who shot nearly 80 percent from the foul line, hitting 17-of-22 chances. Winner was 6-for-8 from the line and Stephanie Fazenbaker, who had nine points, went 7-for-8.

Julia Ludwick made six field goals and 11-of-17 foul shots for a game-high 23 points for Keyser. Brooke Mangold chipped in with 13 points.

Mountain Ridge (13-5, 8-4 AMAC) led by only a point, 27-26, at halftime, but outscored Keyser (3-12, 2-9) 18-10 in the third quarter to take a 45-36 edge into the fourth.

The Miners also won the jayvee game, 37-25. Laura DeVore and Carlie Lewis had nine points for Mountain Ridge and Molly Cuthbertson had 10 for Keyser.

Mountain Ridge will host Allegany in a makeup game on Friday night. Keyser visits East Hardy tonight.

Salisbury 28

SALISBURY, Pa. — Kristen Corridini had 18 points and Shade grabbed an early lead and built upon it the rest of the way in defeating Salisbury.

Chelsey Pongrac added 13 points and Erin Spinelli had 12 for Shade, which led 17-4 after the first quarter and 40-17 at the half.

Lydia Hale-Cooper had a big night for Salisbury (4-13) with 19 points and 18 rebounds.
