February 17, 2010 — PETERSBURG, W.Va. — Frankfort proved the first time wasn’t a fluke, beating third-ranked Petersburg when it mattered most by handing the Vikings their walking papers with a 53-50 victory in the first round of the West Virginia Region 2, Section 2 Playoffs in Petersburg.

The teams were at each other all night, never pulling more than a few points away from the other. The Falcons held a one-point lead at 12-11 following one period, and Petersburg was ahead 28-27 at halftime. The score was tied at 36 when the fourth quarter began.

Frankfort was ahead one 51-50 with 20 seconds to play when it got a steal that resulted in a layup for a 3-point lead. On Petersburg’s last possession, the Vikings called two timeouts and ran 18 seconds off the clock in order to take the last shot, but a look at the top of the key missed as time expired.

Saydi Whiteman scored 12 points to lead the Falcons, while Katie Bush and Mikala Miller both provided eight points off the bench. Bush was credited with taking pressure off the Frankfort offense and opening up the outside.

Maddie Shambaugh had 10 points and seven rebounds, and Savannah Hose had eight points, seven assists and six rebounds.

Aisha Webster scored 20 points in her final game as a Viking. Senior Megan Whetzel added 10 points.

The Falcons (7-11) account for two of the Vikings (14-3) losses this season. Both losses occurred in Petersburg.

Frankfort will play at Berkeley Springs on Friday in the sectional finals.
