CUMBERLAND — The Allegany boys and Northern girls, who recently clinched Appalachian Mountain Athletic Conference championships, are the top seeds in their upcoming Maryland Class 1A West Region basketball playoff tournaments.
The Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association held its playoff drawing on Sunday, with the top four teams in each region, based on regular season win-loss records, being seeded and the remainder of the field drawn at random to fill out each regional tournament bracket.
The regional tournaments begin this weekend with first-round games. Many teams have at least one game left in their regular seasons.
Coach Tedd Eirich’s unbeaten Campers, AMAC and City League champions for the second year in a row, are the No. 1 seed in the 1A West boys field. They will put an 18-game winning streak on the line tonight at Middletown.
Coach Steve Fratz’s Northern Huskies have completed their regular season, and the AMAC championship is the first league crown in the program’s history, according to school records. Northern ended its regular season with a 16-game winning sreak, is 19-2 overall, and won the AMAC with a 13-1 mark.
The Class 1A West Region is split into East and West sectionals, with the sectional winners meeting for the region championship and trip to the state tournament. The Allegany boys and girls are the defending region champions.
The results of Sunday’s drawing and playoff pairings are listed in today’s Scoreboard page.
