Donald R. Rawlings [Keyser]

KEYSER, W.Va. — Donald Ray Rawlings, 66, of Route 4, Keyser, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2010, at the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center, Cumberland, Md. In 2004, Donald was diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer. He did not allow this disease to define who he was. He fought a long and courageous battle and died peacefully with his family around him, cheering him on as he won his race.

Born on July 16, 1943, at Bloomington, Md., he was a son of the late Thomas F. and Blanche A. (McDonald) Rawlings. He also was preceded in death by two sisters, Betty Peregoy and Peggy Lawson.

Mr. Rawlings was retired with 20 years of service with the Kelly-Springfield Tire Company. He was a 1962 graduate of Elk Garden High School and was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Vietnam War.

Don enjoyed many things in his life, but that of which he was the proudest was his unique craftsmanship and artistic ability to take used and cast-off furniture and refinish and recraft them into treasured items that many families in this community proudly display and use in their homes today.

Surviving are his loving and devoted wife of 40 years, Rebecca L. (Tasker) Rawlings; his adoring and faithful daughters, Rhonda L. Brewer and husband Clay of Chambersburg, Pa., Tammy N. Shoemaker and husband Chris of Keyser, Cindy D. Saville and husband Clint of Berkeley Springs, and Jennifer L. Everline and husband Matt of Keyser; seven loving grandchildren, Miranda L. Rawlings, Jenna and Talon Brewer, Alexa Shoemaker, Miyah Saville and Drew and Averi Everline; one sister, Patricia Paugh of Gaithersburg, Md.; and four brothers, William Rawlings and wife Sara Jane of New Creek, Gale Rawlings and wife Beulah and Thomas Rawlings and wife Lori, all of Gore, Va., and Richard Rawlings and wife Brenda of Front Royal, Va.

Friends may call at the Smith Funeral Home, Keyser Chapel, on Sunday, Feb. 21, 2010, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Smith Funeral Home, Keyser Chapel, on Monday, Feb. 22, 2010, at 2 p.m. with Pastor Dan Walker officiating.

Interment will be in the Potomac Memorial Gardens, Keyser.

Condolences and personal reflections to the family may be left after Mr. Rawling's obituary at smithfuneralhomes.net.
